The Town |
Asilah is a smallish, very pretty fishing town 45 Km south of Tangier on the Atlantic coast, and is accessible within 30 mins by taxi from Tangier airport. Its location provides a good base for excursions to Tangier itself, but is much more tranquil, as well as Chefchaouen and Tetouan further afield. Great Atlantic beaches are located just to the south and to the north of the town. Compared to the bustle of Tangier, it presents a tranquil alternative way to experience Morocco, without the hassle. The ancient (15th century) Portuguese walls, with ramparts and canons, still surround the core of the old town (the Medina), and the houses, whitewashed and painted in the Mediterranean blue and turquoise, are traditional in style. Road traffic is limited outside the town walls, and everything is easily reached on foot. In August each year, the town hosts the Asilah Culural Festival, celebrating the tradition of mural painting and plastic arts. |
