The People |
The people of Morocco are largely Arabic speakers of Arab and Berber (the original inhabitants of North Africa) descent; Spanish and French are also widely spoken, and many people, especially the younger generation, speak English. In general, the people of Asilah are very friendly and offer a warm welcome to foreigners. Of course, they are interested in the tourist “Euro”, so don’t forget to bargain for good prices! The main thing is to seek good rapport and respect, in any language. Basically in Asilah everyone is more laid back than elsewhere in Morocco, and visitors do not feel pressure to buy goods or services. Single Western women have noted (with surprise) that they are not hassled on the streets here. |
